Rant: My bank's fraud alert system froze my card at a gas pump in Phoenix

It happened last Tuesday when I was filling up before work. The system flagged a $45 gas purchase as suspicious and shut everything down, leaving me stuck. Has anyone else had their bank be too aggressive with fraud checks?

Does it feel like everything is set up to assume you're doing something wrong? I've had my card declined trying to buy groceries in my own town. These systems are so worried about stopping fraud that they just stop normal life instead. It's like we're all guilty until proven innocent by some computer that can't tell the difference between a trip and a crime. Makes you feel powerless when you can't even buy gas.

Wow, I always figured those fraud alerts were a good thing. But having your card declined for groceries really shows how broken it is. It must feel awful to be treated like a criminal just for living your life. You've totally changed how I see this.
