Rant: My bank's fraud alert system froze my card at a gas pump in Phoenix

Does it feel like everything is set up to assume you're doing something wrong? I've had my card declined trying to buy groceries in my own town. These systems are so worried about stopping fraud that they just stop normal life instead. It's like we're all guilty until proven innocent by some computer that can't tell the difference between a trip and a crime. Makes you feel powerless when you can't even buy gas.

Vent: I was overpaying for airport food in Denver for years because I never looked up

Spot the same trick in every big box store, putting the milk and bread in the far back corner. They design spaces to herd people past the expensive stuff first. Airports just do it with security lines and gate placement instead of shopping aisles. It's all about controlling the path to squeeze out more money.

I just logged my 500th spreadsheet cell check and felt weirdly proud of it.

Totally get that feeling, I used to count pallets on a loading dock. Set a goal for the next hundred cells, maybe 600, and give yourself a small reward like a better coffee break. It turns the grind into a game you can win, which helps more than people think. Those tiny wins are what get you through the day without losing your mind.

My neighbor's oven almost burned down her kitchen last month

Right, perry.skyler, the old ones definitely don't shut off! My ancient oven filled the whole house with smoke last Thanksgiving because of a peach pie disaster. It was the same thing, just a crazy bubble over that hit the bottom. Makes you really watch the timer, doesn't it? I bet those newer models have to handle it better, but who can afford one.

I thought AI video generation was just for weird deepfakes until I saw a local news station use it to recreate a missing historical building in Seattle.

Wow, that's a really good point about bringing things back. It makes me worry a bit, though. If we can rebuild any lost place perfectly, what pushes us to save the real ones still standing? @barbara_hall9, your train station example is cool, but it might let city planners off the hook. They could just say they'll make a digital copy later after tearing something down. This tech should help us care for real history, not replace it.
