Teller at my local branch talked me into a 'free' checking upgrade

She said it would save me $12 a month on fees, but then I got hit with a $35 overdraft penalty last Tuesday because the new account had a different cutoff time, has anyone else gotten burned by a switch like that?

oh man, that exact thing happened to me last year and i'm still a little salty about it. the teller made it sound like a total no-brainer, 'free upgrade, saves you money!' but then i somehow ended up with an overdraft on a day i thought i had covered. i swear i've learned my lesson about reading the fine print on cutoff times after that, but honestly my brain just glazes over whenever i see 'terms and conditions.' i feel like banks design these 'upgrades' specifically to trip you up so they can collect that $35 fee. in my experience, the 'free' checking upgrades are about as free as a 'free' puppy.

@riley860 "free upgrade, saves you money!" yeah that's exactly how they get you. it's like the whole system is built on tiny traps you don't see until you're already in one. i've noticed this same pattern everywhere not just banks. phone plans, subscription services, even grocery store loyalty cards. they dangle something that sounds good and hope you'll just nod and sign without asking the one question that matters: "what's the catch?" feels like we're all just dodging little scams all day long and the only winning move is to get really good at saying no. you ever catch yourself second guessing a deal even when it's legit just cause you've been burned so many times?
