Warning: my tap-to-pay went rogue and charged the wrong card at a deli in Hoboken
I tapped my phone to pay for a $9 sandwich and it hit my expired debit card instead of the credit card I selected, then the reader froze and double-charged. Took 45 minutes on hold with my bank to reverse it, has anyone else had a NFC reader pick the wrong card on them?
...and then the terminal asked if I wanted a receipt printed in Braille, which was weird since I have working eyes. Honestly my phone has better luck picking my pocket lint than the card I actually want to use. I once tapped for a coffee and it paid with a card that expired during the Obama administration, and I just stood there nodding at the barista like that was my plan all along. The double charge thing happened to me at a bodega, and the guy behind the counter just shrugged and said "the machine gets excited sometimes." So yeah, you're not alone, but I've learned to treat tap-to-pay like a slot machine. Bring cash if you want a guaranteed outcome.
