Found out a dictionary once got banned in Anchorage schools for a word nobody even uses
I was reading a library newsletter last week and it mentioned that an American Heritage dictionary got pulled from Anchorage school shelves back in 1987. The reason was one single definition, and not even a dirty word. Apparently school board members flipped out over the entry for "bed," which listed a slang meaning they didn't like. So an entire reference book, thousands of pages, got yanked over maybe two lines of text. I called my sister who teaches 8th grade there and she said she had never heard about it. Does anyone know if other school districts did the same with dictionaries, and how did that even get resolved?
