I called a book boring until my friend read one page out loud in Tulsa

Last month my buddy brought a copy of Lolita to our lunch break. I said it was old and overrated. He opened to a random page and read like 4 sentences. The way the words actually worked on me in 30 seconds was embarrassing. I had only ever judged it by the cover and the court cases. Now I get why it gets banned. It makes you uncomfortable with yourself. That is the whole point. After that I started reading the first page of any challenged book before I trash talk it. Anyone else flip on a book after hearing it out loud or reading a single passage?

Wait, same thing happened to me with a different book. I used to make fun of people who were into poetry collections, thought it was all pretentious nonsense. Then my sister made me read like five lines of this Mary Oliver poem about a deer in the woods and I got chills, man. Now I have two whole books of hers on my shelf. It's wild how one good page can completely flip your brain around. Hearing it out loud with the right rhythm honestly changes everything. I'm just glad we both got caught before being too loud about it, lol.
