Why a basic buzz cut took me over forty minutes yesterday

Yesterday, a client came in for a simple buzz cut. His hair was super thick and had lots of knots. My clippers kept jamming, so I had to go slow. What should have been a quick job took over forty minutes. I learned to check the hair first before starting. Has anyone else had a cut that took way longer than planned? What do you do to handle tough hair without wasting time?

Forty minutes for a buzz cut? That seems like a lot. Most guys in and out of the chair for that in like ten minutes flat. Couldn't you just blast through it with a longer guard first to knock out the bulk? A little conditioner spray might have helped too. Hard to believe it got that bad.

My buddy Mike went in for a simple buzz cut last year and it took the barber almost an hour. His hair was super thick and had this weird wave that just ate clippers. They had to stop twice to oil the blades because they kept overheating. I get what you're saying @jamie_clark, but some hair is just built different.

Used to think the same thing until I had a guy with hair like steel wool. His matted hair actually broke my clipper blade halfway through. Sometimes you just hit the perfect storm of thickness and texture that defies all normal timing.
