I finally caught someone using water instead of apple juice in their mop sauce at a competition in Memphis last Saturday
The guy next to me at the Memphis BBQ Fest was bragging about his mop sauce recipe, then I watched him pour straight tap water into his spray bottle. Why bother competing if you're not even going to try for a proper bark? Has anyone else seen this kind of shortcut out there?

Water ain't gonna do anything for a bark, that's for sure. But you gotta remember some people use a water spritz to keep things from drying out, not as an actual mop sauce though lol. That guy was definitely phoning it in for sure.

Is it just me or does that sort of half-hearted effort show up everywhere now, not just in BBQ? You see it at coffee shops where they barely steam the milk or at hardware stores where employees just point instead of walking you to the aisle. @rosebennett nailed it though, that guy was phoning it in and water was just the easiest way to go through the motions.
