The register printer jammed right as the lunch rush hit, 45 people waiting

Tuesday at the sandwich shop in Columbus, our ticket printer ate a roll of thermal paper right at 12:15. Every order backed up on the screen and the line grew to about 45 folks before I could even grab the spare. I had to scribble orders on napkins while my coworker took over the register, and we got through it but service slowed way down. The printer finally worked after I took it apart and cleaned the gears with a toothpick, but that fixed maybe 10 minutes. Has anyone else had a small piece of equipment totally wreck their whole shift like that? What did you do when the backup plan also broke?
