A snapped pinch bolt on a customer's rear derailleur taught me to stop guessing at torque
Had a guy's bike up on the stand at the shop on 4th Street Tuesday, just a routine tune up, and I went to snug the pinch bolt on his rear derailleur by feel like I always do. Bolt sheared right off in my hand, and I had to dig the stub out with an extractor while he waited. Turned out his cage was a cheap stamped steel one that spec'd 5 newton meters and I'd been cranking closer to 9. Now I keep the little beam wrench on the bench and actually look up the number. Anyone else got a torque spec they used to just eyeball and got burned on?
