Blew out a spoke on a group ride in Boulder, now I check tension before every event

Was doing a fast Saturday group ride near Boulder Creek last month and my rear wheel just buckled on a downhill sprint, snapped a spoke clean at the nipple. I had just had the wheel trued a week earlier at a shop, so I figured it was fine, but now I'm wondering if I should buy a tension meter and do it myself instead of trusting someone else's quick spin. How do you guys decide when a wheel is safe for hard group riding, do you check spoke tension on every bike before an event or just after a crash or a big ride?
