Hit 500 bottom bracket overhauls last month and the one thing that finally stuck
Hit my 500th bottom bracket overhaul last month at the shop in Fort Collins and the number honestly caught me off guard, I thought I was closer to 300. The weird part is what changed around number 400, I stopped reaching for the torque wrench on every single cup and started feeling for the point where the bearing preload just goes quiet, and my comebacks dropped from maybe 3 a month to almost none. I also switched to cleaning the shell threads with a brass brush and a dab of grease before anything goes back in, takes 30 extra seconds and I have not had a creak come back since March. The old guy who trained me kept saying 40 newton meters is just a starting point, not the answer, and it took me about 300 jobs to get what he meant. Curious if anyone else has a number where the muscle memory finally kicked in, or am I just slow to catch on?
