Just realized a $3 tube of dielectric grease saved my winter commuter's shifter
My 8 speed trigger shifter kept skipping gears every time the temp dropped below 30 here in Minneapolis, and I was ready to buy a new one for $45. On a hunch I pulled the cover off and found the pawls were full of gritty road salt slush, so I cleaned it out with brake cleaner and packed a thin layer of dielectric grease over the guts instead of oil. Two months of slush later it has not skipped once, and the grease stays put where oil just washed away. Only thing to watch is using too much, since heavy grease can make the pawls sluggish in real cold. Anybody got a brand of grease they trust more for winter shifters?
