Ngl I had to walk a customer's bike home after a shifter cable snapped mid-shift

I was out on a test ride after adjusting a guy's 9 speed setup downtown near the coffee shop by 3rd street. Went to shift from the big ring to the small one and the cable just let go with a pop. No warning at all. Had to push the bike 6 blocks back to the shop while he stood there looking at me. Turns out the housing was rusty inside from a bad install the previous owner did. Has anyone else had a cable fail on a test ride? How'd you handle it?

Man that's rough. I read somewhere that stainless cables can still corrode inside bad housing, kinda makes you wonder why shops don't check more carefully on used bikes. @emmag40 I would've been the same way, just standing there feeling like a total goof.

Rusty housing from a previous owner, that's brutal, I would have been mortified.
