That old guy in the shop who said my chain was fine, he was right
Customer brought in a creaky bottom bracket last Friday and this retiree hanging around said it was just the chain needing lube, I brushed him off. After 20 minutes of chasing ghosts I tried his way first and the creak vanished, so now I listen before I tear anything apart. Anyone else had a veteran regular save them from overthinking a simple fix?

The part about listening before tearing things apart hit home. My buddy Dave had the same thing happen with his truck. He was dead sure the alternator was shot, had the multimeter out and everything. Old timer in the auto parts lot told him to check the ground strap first. Dave ignored it for a whole day, replaced the alternator, still no charge. Next morning he tried the ground strap, it was corroded to hell. Cleaned it up, fired right up. Now he always asks the old timers first, saves him a ton of time and a hundred bucks.
