My cousin said to skip the first season of The Wire... and I almost did

He told me it was too slow and to start with season two instead. I tried the first episode and got bored, so I jumped ahead like he said. After a few episodes, I was totally lost with all the new characters and docks story... had to go back and watch it from the start anyway. Anyone else get bad advice about how to watch a show?

Tell people to skip the first season of The Wire and you're basically telling them to skip the whole show. That docks stuff sets up everything. My friend tried to get me to start Game of Thrones at season three because "that's when it gets good." I was so confused about who anyone was or why they were fighting. Had to go back and watch it all from the start anyway.

Used to tell people to skip the first season of Parks and Rec because it felt so different. Then I saw how it sets up Leslie's drive and why Ron is so closed off. You miss all the little jokes that come back later, like the pit. Now I tell everyone to just push through those first six episodes.
