Unpopular opinion: I think 'The Crown' got worse after season 3

I was talking with my sister-in-law in Denver last weekend, and she said she stopped watching after season 4 because it felt like a soap opera. I argued with her at first, but after rewatching the first two seasons, I see her point. The early seasons had a tight focus on the institution itself, but by season 4, it felt like it was just chasing dramatic headlines about Diana and Charles. The nuance of the first 20 episodes is gone. Has anyone else felt the show lost its original, more thoughtful tone?

It actually lost that tone a bit earlier for me. The show started to slip in season 3, not 4. The writing became less sharp when they swapped the entire cast. The new actors were fine, but the scripts felt more like a list of historical events to hit. The magic was in the smaller, quieter moments of the first two seasons.

Didn't a critic say it traded palace intrigue for tabloid drama?
