Unpopular opinion: I think the 'Golden Age of TV' talk is making us miss good shows

I was at a friend's house in Austin last weekend, and his 'to watch' list on his streaming service was over 80 shows long. He was paralyzed, scrolling for an hour, because everything is called 'binge-worthy' or 'a masterpiece'. We ended up watching a quiet British detective show from 2012 that none of us had heard of, and it was fantastic. The constant hype for new stuff buries simpler, well-made series. Has anyone else found a great older show by ignoring all the 'must-watch' lists?

What was the name of that British detective show you liked?

Oh come on, that's just giving up! The hype is there for a REASON. We're living in a time where shows get the budget and freedom to do things they never could before. Look at something like "The Bear" - that level of stress and energy in a kitchen just wasn't on TV ten years ago. Or "Severance," that wild idea would have been a movie at best. Ignoring new stuff means missing out on what's happening RIGHT NOW in culture. @kelly_hayes86 might find her detective show, but she'll miss the next big thing everyone's talking about. You have to dig through some overhyped stuff to find the real gems, but that's better than just watching old things because they're safe.
