I thought quenching tongs in oil was a waste, then a guy at the Meadville forge showed me his 4 year old pair
Mine always got sloppy jaws after a few months of water quench, but his were still tight after 4 years, so I switched and my last pair has held up 8 months now. Does anyone oil quench their tongs, and what weight oil do you use?
Tried it after watching a buddy's tongs stay tight for years while mine went loose every few months. I use plain old 30 weight motor oil, nothing fancy, just what was already in the garage. The trick is getting the jaws hot enough before you dunk them, not screaming hot but a good even orange, then let them cool slow in the oil instead of yanking them out. Been doing this for about a year now and my current pair still bites hard with no wobble. Water quench cools way too fast and that shock is what kills the jaws over time. Give it a shot, you won't go back.
