My striker warped, so I stopped bonking it cold and started warming it up first
Two Saturdays ago in my garage I pulled a hot piece out of the forge and my 3 pound hammer was so cold the face checked and the handle felt loose after maybe 20 blows. I used to think guys who torched a hammer head before work were wasting time, but now I leave mine on the forge edge for a bit and the pitting has not gotten worse in the past few weeks. Does anyone else warm their tools before a cold-start session, or am I just making extra work for myself?

Did you notice the handle felt loose before or after the face checked? Cold steel can make a handle feel off even when nothing is actually wrong. I do warm my hammers on the forge edge too, mostly in winter, and it helps a lot with the sting in my hands. Pitting getting worse after a cold start makes sense though, the face is brittle and the shock goes right through it.
