PSA: 5160 leaf spring stock burned through on a small hidden crack at the eye

Lost a bowie blade last Tuesday right at temper when I noticed the eye of my old leaf spring had a hairline crack I'd never seen, so now I grind a shallow notch there before forging and dunk the whole eye in water first. Anyone else have a trick for spotting cracks in salvaged spring steel before you waste a full day of work?
