Warning: don't trust the 'ready to forge' label on mystery steel
Picked up a bundle of what was labeled as 1095 from a scrap yard down in Bakersfield last month, spent three hours shaping a blade only to have it crack in the quench. Anyone else stopped buying unmarked stock from places that can't tell you the supplier?

Honestly that "ready to forge" label probably got slapped on by the scrap yard guy who didn't know the difference between a butter knife and a Damascus billet. You ever check if their scales are even calibrated for hardness testing? Most yards just guess based on rust patterns.
