Rant: my Catan group froze up over a trade rule and the night ended early

We were three rounds into a five player game at my buddy Dan's place off Maple Street last Friday when a sheep for ore trade turned into a 25 minute argument about whether you can trade with the bank and another player in the same turn. One guy pulled up the rulebook on his phone and read it out loud twice, and it still didn't settle it, so two people packed up and left by 10. I ended up drawing a little turn order sheet on the back of a receipt so we have something to point at next time. How do you all handle rule fights in the middle of a game, do you just house rule it and move on or stop to look it up every time?
