Unpopular opinion: the guy at my local shop who said to skip sleeving my Terraforming Mars cards was dead wrong
About 8 months ago I was at Game Keeper in Austin picking up a copy of Terraforming Mars and the owner, Ray, talked me out of buying sleeves. He said the cards hold up fine and I would just be throwing money away, so I listened and skipped the $22 pack. Fast forward to now and I have played maybe 30 games with my regular group, and the project cards look rough. The corners are fuzzing, two cards have a visible crease, and the heat tiles have that cloudy scuff mark that makes them feel cheap when you draw them. Worst part is you can now tell which cards are worn by feel alone, so I basically leaked info in our game two weeks ago when I grabbed a beat up card and everyone knew it was one of the good ones. I went back to ask Ray about it and he just shrugged and said nobody sleeves base game cards, which feels like advice from a guy who only plays a copy he did not pay for. So now I am looking at rebuying a whole set or hunting down a sleeve brand that still fits the worn edges, and I am annoyed I trusted one opinion instead of just spending the cash up front. Has anyone else had a shop guy talk them out of protecting a game they play constantly? And is there a sleeve that still works once the corners are already messed up?
