A retired boilermaker in Tulsa told me he stopped torching seized studs and started soaking them in ATF and acetone overnight
I thought he was full of it until I tried it on a 2 inch flange bolt that had been fighting me for 45 minutes, and it spun off by hand the next morning, so now I'm wondering if anyone else mixes their own penetrating oil or if I'm late to the party here.
That line about the retired boilermaker soaking seized studs overnight got my attention because I read a machinist forum thread years ago where a bunch of old timers swore by the same mix. The recipe they passed around was half acetone and half ATF, shake it up, and dab it on with a syringe or a small brush since it separates fast. One guy claimed a 50/50 batch beat every store bought brand he tested, and a few others backed him up. Word of warning from that thread though, acetone eats paint and some plastics so keep it off anything you care about, and mix small batches since it does not keep long.
