Saw a boiler at the old paper mill in Wisconsin with 6 inch mud drum scale, changed my mind on chemical treatment
Toured the mill in Wisconsin Rapids last month and the inspector showed me a mud drum caked solid after 4 years of skipped treatments. I used to think blowdown and chemicals were just upsells, but seeing that scale break off in chunks the size of my palm made me a believer in the program. Anyone else seen a drum get that bad, or is 4 years about normal for neglect?
I read a case study from a plant in Ohio where the mud drum had close to 5 inches of buildup after only 3 years of no treatment. They ended up cutting a section out because the scale had bonded so tight you could not chip it. Four years sounds about right for that level of neglect, maybe even on the shorter end depending on their water hardness. Once it gets that thick it acts like insulation, so you are burning fuel for nothing and risking tube failure on top of it.
