Spent 3 hours chasing a pinhole leak on a 40 year old feedwater heater last Thursday

Turned out it was just a tiny crack hiding under a weld bead I had run two days prior, has anyone else had a leak show up in a totally different spot than you were looking?

Used a dye penetrant test on a similar old feedwater heater and it showed the crack was actually a foot away from where I had been looking. The dye seeps into even tiny openings and makes them stand out bright red. Ended up chasing the crack back to where it started and ground it out proper before rewelding, saved me a ton of headache.

@lily_stone76 Dye penetrant saved me too, read about how it finds cracks invisible to the naked eye.
