Tried a flux core wire I'd never used before on a tank repair last week

I had to patch a 1/4" crack in a feed tank up at the grain elevator. Usually run 7018 rod but the location was awkward so I grabbed some Lincoln NR-211 off the shelf. That stuff laid down way cleaner than I expected with almost no slag hammering needed. Has anyone else found a wire that surprised them on a tough job?

Laid down cleaner than I expected" is exactly right for me with that same wire. I grabbed it for a rusty washout pipe on a combine and it ran smooth even with the wind kicking up. No slag hammering is a huge time saver when you're just trying to get the machine back together.

Question whether it's really that serious though @diana314. I mean yeah, laying down clean is nice and all, but I've run that same wire on some pretty rough stuff and it flaked right off on me after a couple weeks. Ngl, I think people hype up these flux core wires way too much sometimes. If you're doing a quick fix on a combine and it gets you through the harvest, sure, but I wouldn't trust it for anything that's gonna see real vibration or heat long term. Just saying, don't go throwing away your slag hammer yet.
