Went with the 1/8 inch rod on a 3/8 plate root pass, and I'm still not sure

Kept getting lack of fusion on 1/4 inch rod at 90 amps on this tank shell job in Tulsa, so I dropped to 1/8 and ran hotter, and now the toes look wet but I'm second guessing if I traded one defect for another, so what rod size are you all running on thicker shells?
