Can we talk about how our club picked the same book two months in a row?

Our book club in Fresno picked a 600 page novel back in March, and when April rolled around the vote somehow landed on the sequel without most of us noticing. Half the group of 9 hadn't even finished the first one, so our meeting turned into a recap session with one guy just nodding along. I tried to bring up a shorter pick for May and got outvoted 5 to 4 for a third book in the series. Has anyone dealt with a group that keeps voting in a chain like this?
