Had to choose between the annotated version or the regular paperback for Moby Dick

I went with the annotated one because I figured I'd need the help. Big mistake. The footnotes were every 3 lines and totally killed the flow for me. Gave up around page 120 after spending an hour on a single chapter. Anyone else find that extra context just slows you down too much?

Nah, the footnotes added way more than they took away for me.

Hold up though, which footnotes did you actually like? I'm thinking about chapter 7 where House of Leaves has that massive footnote chain that spirals into a whole different story about the guy making porn. That one felt like it was punishing me for reading it, not adding anything. But the footnotes in Infinite Jest about the Eschaton game, those were hilarious and actually made the scene work better. So which ones got you good?
