My aunt insisted our club should always read the book before meeting

She said it would lead to better arguments, and she was right. When we tried discussing 'The Goldfinch' without finishing it, half the group just nodded along. Does anyone else have a rule that saved their book club?

Ever try to talk about a book when half the people just read the summary online? We had that happen with a mystery novel. The rule that saved us was no spoilers until the last meeting. It forced everyone to actually read the whole thing and guess along the way. The discussions got way more fun because people were trying to solve it together. Now nobody cheats and looks up the ending.

Our book club does that too. Works great.
