Our club spent 6 meetings on one chapter of The Goldfinch

We picked The Goldfinch for our club in Portland and thought we'd fly through it. Nope, we spent 6 whole meetings just on the Las Vegas section because everyone had a different read on Boris. Half the group thinks he's a bad influence, the other half says he's the only real friend Theo has. It took us 4 months to finish the book and we almost split the club over the ending. Has anyone else had a book take way longer than planned because the arguments just kept getting bigger?

My buddy Rob had the same thing happen with Infinite Jest. His group spent like five straight meetings on the first hundred pages because two guys kept going back and forth about whether the film is actually real in the story or just a metaphor. They finally had to vote on whether to skip ahead, and one dude quit the club over it. Rob still brings it up whenever anyone mentions a hard book.
