Shoutout to the guy at Powell's in Portland who said my book club was picking books wrong
Honestly I almost walked past him. I was at Powell's in Portland two weekends ago, killing time in the used fiction aisle before my book club met up at a bar on Burnside, and this older guy in a faded rain jacket saw the pile in my arms and asked what my group was reading. When I told him we mostly vote on whatever is hot on BookTok, he said flat out that groups who pick that way quit within a year, and he wasn't mean about it, just sure of himself. He said his group out in Beaverton has run 11 years and they let one person pick the book and everyone else just has to deal, no voting at all. I told him that sounded like a dictatorship and he laughed and said voting turns every meeting into a popularity contest where the loudest person wins and the shy people stop coming. Ngl, our group started with 9 people in January and we were down to 4 by the time I was standing in that aisle, so he might have a point. I brought it up at the bar that night and got shot down in about 30 seconds, mostly because two people love being the ones who decide. Has anyone here been in a group that dropped voting? Did it actually keep people showing up or did it just move the arguing somewhere else?
