Showerthought: My $50 book club was a total waste of money

I joined this paid online book club last month for $50 and I'm honestly kicking myself. The "discussions" were basically just the moderator summarizing the plot and nobody actually debating anything. I wanted to argue about character motives and hidden meanings, you know, the fun stuff. Has anyone else joined a book club that promised real debates but ended up being a total dud?

Signed up for a philosophy book club thinking I'd get into some heavy debates about free will and ethics. Turned out to be one guy reading quotes from the book out loud and asking if we agreed. Sat through two meetings before I realized I was paying fifty bucks for a slightly worse version of SparkNotes.

Gotta say @the_charlie hit the nail on the head, it's like people forget that real discussion is the whole point of a book club. It makes me wonder if this is just part of a bigger trend where everything feels watered down, like even casual activities get turned into passive consumption instead of active conversation. Why pay for someone to talk at you when you could just read the book alone and skip the middleman?
