TIL my book club's 'safe space' rule is actually killing good debates

Had coffee with our club's founder last Tuesday and she said she's tired of picking books nobody hates. We spent 3 months reading feel good novels because someone got upset over a brutal ending in February. She admitted the rule we made about 'no harsh criticism' has turned every meeting into polite nodding. I used to love when someone said a character was flat or the plot was lazy, now we just talk about snacks. Is it worth keeping the peace if the discussions are boring? Has anyone else's club gone soft like this and found a way to bring back the teeth?
