Vent: My book club argued for an hour about whether the main character in 'The Midnight Library' was selfish or just lost.

Half of us thought she was being a coward by not facing her real problems, while the other half said her journey through the library was a brave way to confront regret, and now I'm wondering if a character's core flaw is what makes them interesting or just frustrating to read about.

Honestly I used to find flaws like that just annoying, but a friend pointed out they're what make a character feel real. Now I see it as the whole point of the story, because watching someone figure their stuff out is way more interesting than a perfect person.

You said it's the whole point of the story, and that's spot on. A perfect character gives you nothing to grab onto. The flaws are where the actual story happens, you know? Without them, what's even the point of reading.

Exactly. A perfect character is just a cardboard cutout you have to drag through the plot. The mess is the point. I want to see someone make the wrong call because they're scared or proud, and then have to live with it. That's where you actually care what happens next.
