Unpopular opinion: prefinished plywood is overrated for custom cabinets

My supplier talked me into using prefinished cherry ply for a kitchen remodel 2 months ago, said it saves time and looks cleaner. But the edges were a pain to match and the finish chipped when I cut it. Anyone else think raw ply with your own finish still comes out better?

Three years ago I swore by my old analog panel setup

At a shop in Tucson last month, I had to troubleshoot a Garmin G5 install on a Cessna 172 and it took me 45 minutes just to find the power wire was loose on the back. An older tech walked over and showed me how the G5's self-test page flags voltage issues immediately, something I always ignored because I trusted my multimeter more. Has anyone else switched from old-school methods to digital displays and regretted not doing it sooner?

Can we talk about these cheap USB flash drives that fail during a software load?

I was loading some new nav software into a Garmin G1000 last Thursday. Used one of those no-name USB drives from the checkout aisle. Halfway through the upload, drive died. Corrupted the whole load. Had to redo the whole thing from scratch. Boss was not happy. Anyone else stick to specific brands for loading software?

A pastry chef told me my pie dough was tough because of too much water

I always added extra to make it easier to roll, but she said that develops gluten and makes it shrink. Dropped the water by 2 tablespoons and kept the dough colder, now my crusts actually stay flaky instead of turning into leather. Any other tweaks that make a big difference?

That whole 'location location location' saying finally clicked for me

I was dead set on a fixer-upper in a cheaper part of town for months, then my agent showed me the comps on a tiny house near the new light rail stop in Denver. It appraised for 15% more than the ask just because of that stop. Has anyone else been surprised by what a transit line actually does to value?

Dropped $400 on a Klein fish tape and it paid for itself in a month

I was using a cheap steel fish tape from the hardware store for years. Hated every time I had to pull wire through a tricky conduit bend. The tape would kink up and sometimes snap inside the pipe. Finally got sick of it and bought a Klein steel fish tape with a fiberglass rod for around $400. Ran it through a 90 foot pull on my second job that week. No kinks no problems. The time I saved on that one job alone covered half the cost. Now I wonder why I waited so long to stop being cheap. Anyone else find that spending money on a good fish tape changed how they feel about conduit work?

I spent $85 on a 'rare' philodendron cutting that just died

I saw this gorgeous philodendron gloriosum cutting online, sold as a 'rare collector's item' for eighty five bucks. The seller had great pictures and promised it was a strong, rooted plant. When it arrived after a week in the mail, it looked okay at first, but the single leaf started yellowing within days. I did everything right, good soil, indirect light, kept it humid. It just slowly rotted at the base. I feel like I paid for the hype, not a healthy plant. A lot of these 'rare' plant sellers are just cashing in on the trend and the plants aren't ready to be sold. I should have waited and bought a smaller, established plant from a local nursery for half the price. Has anyone else had a cutting fail on them after spending a lot?

Just hit 10,000 unread emails in my work inbox and I'm not sure if I should celebrate or cry

I opened it this morning and the counter literally said 10,001. I think it's been building since I started this job in Phoenix three years ago. The pros are I guess I'm never bored, but the cons are obvious, like missing important stuff. Has anyone else faced a mountain like this and actually dug out?

My main band saw blade snapped right in the middle of breaking down a side of beef yesterday, so I had to finish the job with a hand saw and it took an extra hour.

Debate time: do you think it's smarter to replace blades at the first sign of wear to avoid this mess, or run them until they break to get every last bit of value out of them?

Last Thursday, we had a 45 minute debate about whether Daisy Buchanan was a victim or just selfish. Two members got so heated they stopped talking to each other. The weird part was the silence, just the sound of someone's dog barking in the background. It ended with someone finally saying, 'Can we at least agree the green light was a metaphor?' Survival mode at the checkout" is exactly why I'd push back a little. I've found paying a bit more for the name brand stuff actually means less waste and better nutrition, so my total ends up lower in the long run.

The bone saw that just would not quit

Hold on though. I mean, I get what you're saying about stubbornness but it wasn't just the blade. I was using a fresh blade in my granddad's saw too. The issue was the saw itself had some flex in the frame that made it wander even with a sharp blade. Switching to the other kit fixed it right away cause that frame was way more rigid. So yeah, maybe I should have swapped sooner but the tool itself was still part of the problem, not just me being stubborn. idk, feels like you're putting all the blame on the user here.

Rant: I just read that 40% of filler procedures are done by people without proper medical training.

omg 100% this. my cousin went to one of those places for a "lip flip" and her face was messed up for weeks. turned out the girl running the needle was a former hairdresser who took a weekend workshop. i almost fell for a place near me with all these slick before/after pics on instagram, but i dug deeper and found out the "nurse injector" was actually just a medical assistant with zero licensure for injections. it's honestly terrifying how many people are getting poked by unqualified folks in strip malls with cute names. you gotta ask to see their actual state board license number, not just their business card.

Had to pick between a cheap zoom lens and a prime for my astro shots

So your friend ever make the same mistake with a zoom lens? My buddy down in Tucson borrowed a 18-200mm for a trip to the Grand Canyon, thought it would be perfect for everything. He ended up shooting the whole night at the long end and got nothing but blurry smudges cause he cranked the ISO too high trying to keep it fast. @reese_garcia is right about the wide prime, but even a fast zoom can work if you know your limits. I passed that 50mm advice onto my friend but he still swears by his kit lens for stars, which is wild to me.
