The $75 penalty that made me question if reviews even matter for small jobs

Last month I had a handyman quote me $200 to fix a wobbly deck railing, but he finished in 20 minutes and charged $275 for 'materials' he never listed. He's got 4.9 stars across 60 reviews, but after I left a 2 star note about the hidden upcharge, he responded with a screenshot of our text exchange and called me unreasonable. Now I'm wondering, for small jobs under $500, is one bad review actually worth the hassle when the contractor has a huge base of happy customers? Or should we treat reviews as a tool to warn others even if it means dealing with public pushback? Has anyone else had a contractor dispute a review over a minor amount and it make you second guess posting?

Man, that brings back a story. I once hired a guy to paint my garage door, and he quoted me $150 then hit me with an extra $60 for "trim paint" that I watched him use from one single can. I left a 3 star review saying the price was a surprise, and he replied with a photo of his dog and a note saying I must have missed the fine print in our verbal agreement. The weird part is his dog was cute, so I felt kinda bad about the review even though I was annoyed. That dog really did soften the blow, and now I just check if contractors have a weird pet before I hire them. Reviews are a gamble, but you never know what kind of response you'll get.
