Old timer told me to skip the ladder strap, almost lost my rig on a slate roof in Albany

A 30 year veteran at the supply house said I was wasting time with a ladder strap on chimney work, so I tried his way last Tuesday on a steep pitch. The ladder slid about 8 inches before I caught it, and it took me 10 minutes to get my heart rate down while the homeowner watched from the window. Anyone else get advice that sounded smart but put you in a sketchy spot, or do you always trust the old guys over your own gut?

Strap's cheap insurance until it ain't, that 8 inches was your gut talking.
