Hot take: pressing signatures with a bone folder beat my nipping press on a 200-page text block last month
I had a 200-page text block of 80lb paper and ran half the signatures through my nipping press, then creased the other half by hand with a bone folder on the table. The press flattened the fold but left a soft, rounded edge that never sat flush, while the hand-creased ones locked tight and opened flat right away. I checked the spines after casing in and the press side had gaps about 1/16 inch deep in three spots. If you are fighting a stubborn fold, try the folder first before you crank down the press. Anybody have a paper weight where the press actually beats hand creasing?
