TIL my so-called "acid-free" glue ate through a 1940s paperback in 2 weeks

Grabbed a fancy pH-neutral PVA from a shop in Portland, glued a torn spine on an old mystery novel, and now the pages around the repair are brown and crumbly. What do you all use that actually passes the long-term test without this kind of surprise?
