Almost lost $4,000 on a roof repair because I didn't check the contractor's license first

Last month in Phoenix I hired a guy named Mike who said he could fix my leaky roof for $4,000 cash. He took the money, patched two shingles, and vanished. Turns out his license expired in 2022 and the county had a bunch of complaints against him. Has anyone else dealt with a contractor who ghosted after a big payment?

I saw on the local news that unlicensed contractors are a huge problem here in Phoenix, especially after the monsoon storms last year. Sorry that happened to you, Mike sounds like a real piece of work.

Those 4,000 bucks could've gone toward a real fix. Did you ever try tracking down his bond or seeing if the county's contractor recovery fund could help at all?
