My uncle ran the same drywall crew for 22 yrs and said the trick was never hiring the best guy
Sat with my uncle Ray at his kitchen table in Dayton last weekend and he said he built his whole crew around the 3rd best guy who ever showed up, not the best one. Said the best ones leave for their own truck within a year or two, but the steady ones stay and train everybody else, which is why his crew never fell apart. Does anyone else here run their team that way, or am I about to copy a guy who just got lucky with one crew?

2nd best guy on my old crew was me and let me tell you, that theory only works if the 3rd best guy actually shows up sober on Mondays. Ray might've just found a unicorn who liked hanging drywall more than he liked money. In my experience the steady ones stay because they can't pass a drug test anywhere else, not because they're secretly coaching the new guys. But hey, 22 years is 22 years, so maybe the old man cracked some code the rest of us keep missing.
