The 2AM email that taught me never to trust a 'quick sync' from my manager
At my last job in Columbus, my manager kept saying we were "aligned" but somehow every task came back with a new twist. I started logging all our chats in a shared doc after a Friday call where he denied ever asking me to skip QA on a release. That doc saved my butt three weeks later when he tried to put a missed deadline on me, and I had a screenshot from 8:43 AM Tuesday showing he approved the delay. Now I always send a same-day recap email, even if it feels like overkill. Anyone else got a trick for covering your tracks without looking paranoid?
Back when I worked retail, my manager pulled the same thing with shift swaps. He'd tell me in person to come in late Saturday, then act shocked when I wasn't there for open. Started texting him "just to confirm" after every chat, and he caught on fast. He got weird about it, like I was building a case or something. Funny how the people who lie are the first ones to feel watched.
Oh man, this is the same thing as when you ask a contractor to put the quote in writing and suddenly they act like you insulted their mother. I've seen it with landlords too, and with a guy who sold me a car once. The second you want a paper trail, the honest people shrug and send you a text, and the sketchy ones get all offended. @singh.wren nailed it, the people with nothing to hide never care about being on the record.
