The greenhouse at the state fair changed how I water my ferns

I walked into that big display at the Iowa State Fair last August and noticed they had a drip tray with pebbles under every pot, not a single saucer. I tried it on my three Boston ferns back home and they stopped dropping fronds within two weeks. Has anyone else tried the pebble tray trick or am I late to this?
