My mortar kept drying out too fast until I stopped wetting the bricks first
Everyone on the crew kept telling me to soak my bricks before laying and I did that for years. Last spring on a job in Tucson I ran out of time and just started laying them dry, and my mortar actually set up better. The mix stayed workable way longer, maybe 20 extra minutes per batch. I used to lose half a hawk of mud on a hot day because the brick sucked all the moisture out. Now I keep a spray bottle for the trowel and leave the bricks alone. My walls have been up since April and not one crack. Anyone else lay dry or am I the only one who quit the bucket?
