Old timer said don't wet the bricks, I should have listened

Back in March I was laying a garden wall in Cleveland and this 70 year old guy walks by, watches me for a minute, and says "stop soaking those bricks, you're just making mud." I figured he was stuck in his ways so I kept spraying them down like I always did. By the time I got to the third course, the mortar was slumping bad and I had to tear out two rows to fix it. He was right, these dense concrete bricks didn't need any water, they were just dragging the mix down. Has anyone else had an old timer's tip that went against everything you learned and actually saved your back? I'm curious if I should trust the next random sidewalk advice I get or just stick with my own habits.
