Picked a paver base over a concrete slab for a 12x14 patio, and now I'm second guessing
So I built a 12x14 patio behind my garage in Boise this spring and I had to pick between pouring a concrete slab or doing a compacted paver base. I went with pavers because the slab quote came back at $2,800 and I could do the base and sand for about $900 in materials. Laid 400 sq ft of 60mm pavers over 4 inches of compacted road base, and honestly the first two rows went fine but the middle of the field dips about a quarter inch where I got lazy with the plate compactor. It's not a trip hazard yet but I see it every single time I walk out there with a beer. My neighbor keeps telling me a slab would never have this problem, and he might be right, but I also like that I can pull up a paver if I ever need to fix a sprinkler line under there. Anyone here done pavers over slab and regretted it, or did the base hold up fine after a couple freeze thaw cycles?
