PSA: I eyeballed a corner on a chimney in Frankfort and the whole stack walked 3/8 of an inch by lunch
I was laying a 12 foot run of block up a chimney chase in Frankfort last Thursday and got lazy with the corner, just tapped it in by eye instead of throwing a level on it. By the time we broke for lunch the stack had walked 3/8 of an inch out of plumb and the next course would not sit, so we tore down four courses and started the corner fresh with a story pole and line blocks. How do you all handle corners on tall runs, do you check plumb every course or just at the leads?
Wait, 3/8 of an inch by lunch?? That is wild for just one corner being tapped in by eye. I would not have guessed a stack could walk that fast on a short 12 foot run like that. Tearing down four courses hurts just reading about it. We always run a level on every course once we get above chest height because it does not take much for things to creep. Was it the heat that day making it move more than normal?
